Every Thursday night on a quiet corner in New Orleans, an entire block of neighbors gathers at the corner store to eat as a family. /The Place to Be/ is a contemporary story about New Orleans' neighborhood culture. The story's main character, Bau Nguyen, is the owner of the store-Singleton's Mini Mart. With an atmosphere that feels as if it's part-bar, part-restaurant, part-community watering hole, Singleton's is not your ordinary corner store. Singleton's is a cross-section of cultures, run by a Vietnamese family who serve up shrimp po-boys and beef pho in equal measure. As life unfolds at Singleton's Mini Mart in cinéma vérité style, we see how the idea of family can be stretched to accommodate more unorthodox interpretations.
