Constantin I. Karadja (1889-1950) - diplomat, lawyer, historian, bibliophile and researcher, was appointed a member of the Romanian Academy in 1946. He was the son of the Ottoman diplomat, Prince Jean Karadja Pasha and his Swedish wife, the author Mary-Louise Smith (daughter of the Swedish parliamentary politician Lars Olsson Smith). Constantine I. Karadja represented Romania as Consul in Budapest (1921-1922), Consul General in Stockholm (1928-1930) and in Berlin (1932-1941). After that, he was head of the Romanian Foreign Ministry's consular department 1941-1944. For his efforts to save human lives during World War II, Constantin Karadja was awarded the Justice of the Nations award by Yad Vashem.
