Alexei, a middle aged Russian professor of Eastern European history in Berlin, stuck in the past and feeling abandoned since his ex-girlfriend, Nadezhda, left him, receives the news that she is getting married back home in Saint Petersburg. Feeling hurt, jealous and desperate, he decides to find and talk her out of it despite avoiding a trip back since he moved to Germany 30 years ago and never looking back. As he takes the unwanted trip, the more he looks for Nadia, the more he runs into places and people from his past, and distracts him from his mission. The adventures in his hometown with people from his past, whom he was not prepared to meet, especially his bohemian childhood friend, Nikolai, who is always in the moment, and their mutual childhood friend and former neighbor, Irina, a well structured woman with every move and options planned. Through the search for Nadia, the nostalgic Alexei learns that he was in search of himself, his past connections in Saint Petersburg, and finds healing.
