The last Italo-Canadian survivors recount their collaboration with Canadian troops and the fight to break the Germans last line of defence in Italy, the Gothic Line. On September 13 1944 Canadian soldiers witnessed first hand the death machine created by the German soldiers. As they stormed the Adriatic coastal town of Rimini the German defences pounded the allied forces. A last ditch effort to contain the war effort in Italy. The Battle of Rimini took place between 13 and 21 September 1944. Operation Olive, was the code name for the offensive launched by the allied troops. Over 1,200,000 men participated in the battle. The battle of Rimini was one of the hardest battles of the Italian campaign. The fighting was comparable to that of the Gustav Line which cut across Monte Cassino. Italian partisans (antifascist guerrilla fighters) aided the Allied battle against the Germans. The Italian Resistance had been fighting underground against the fascist government of Mussolini long before it surrendered, and now it fought against German fascism.
