On July 19, 1937, an exhibition entitled "Degenerate Art" was opened in the Munich Hofgartenarkaden, a National Socialist propaganda event. It took place parallel to the "First Great German Art Exhibition" in the specially built Haus der Kunst and was intended to juxtapose the "German Art" shown here, which was acceptable to the Hitler regime, with the art considered "degenerate" in the Nazi ideology. Works of unpopular art styles such as expressionism and surrealism from the most important German museums were exhibited.
