As Clarence's ground for the family hierarchy dwindles, just like his birthright, he becomes more and more tormented by the idealizations of what he believed life was and had become to realize what it has developed into. Caught in a spider's web, in a modern rendition, Clarence represents a neo-liberalist facet of a generation divide between Americans of an older generation and a younger one.
