Many characters go slightly crazy as they know they are going to die when they go into the war.
The fact that most of the people going to war are only young teenagers (14-16) is quite shocking.
Most of the battles throughout are long, drawn out and start with little to no warning.
The stakes of the storyline, involving the fate of entire cities, nations, and humanity itself, are extremely high.
Rated R for strong gory and disturbing frequent violence, moderate language, mild scenes of non-sexual nudity.
Brilliantly made, but can be very sad at times.
For an animated show, many scenes and episodes can feel realistically dark and distressing.
At times, gruesome battle aftermaths and tragedy scenes are paired with vibrant sceneries. The main theme of simultaneous beauty and cruelty of the world is artistically portrayed on such visuals.
There are many scenes with heavy themes of helplessness and desperation shortly before a brutal and horrific death. The titans usually range in height from twice to twenty times the size of a human. They will gang up on people, they are not delicate about how they eat them, and the show doesn't turn away from the brutality of these moments or the sheer terror of the victims. It can be unsettling.
Season 4 is much more depressing/dark than the others.
The fact that 14-16 years old soldiers are forced to go face to face with human-devouring giants is disturbing.
Moderate/Severe for neurodivergent viewers.
