Subtitles include minor words such as damn or bastard, depending on the translator. Others include insults towards Sara and Becky, such as stupid girl, liar, worthless, etc.

There may be a rare reference to wine or smoking, but it's in the late nineteenth century where just about everyone did. It holds no major part in the series.

One character is an alcoholic, though his alcoholism doesn't prevent him from doing his job. He's a doctor. Other characters view him as lacking due to his condition. This is the worst appearance of alcohol in the show.

Scenes of bullying and mistreatment can be little upsetting or heart-breaking for some.

Scenes of abuse towards Sara are highly disconcerting. She is starved, slapped, kicked, thrown around, and left deathly sick for hours. She is constantly tormented by those in power at the school. If you're not a fan of watching child abuse, you should stay away. This is a very intense show.

Becky is often beaten for various things, usually for defending Sara or working too slowly. The students are forbidden from speaking to her, and subsequently Sara, meaning they can only watch when the two girls are abused, or face their own punishment.
