Following the story of a Mexican family across 5 generations, our progress in managing illnesses over the past century is illustrated while at the same time, the story of the pharmaceutical industry's development and boom is told. We also learn how, as a result of this progress, the epidemiological profile of the population has been modified. By raising life expectancy among the elderly, former ailments and diseases have given way to so-called chronic-degenerative illnesses, on whose treatment contemporary medicine is centered.
