Alaska is in the early stages of a second gold rush. Unlike the first gold rush, where men with picks and shovels staked small claims and left relatively small footprints, 21st century gold mining is in the hands of large, multi-national corporations, who's potential footprints are massive. The Donlin Gold Mine is touted as the largest known undeveloped gold deposit on earth and yet very few people outside it's remote location know of it's existence. Through mosquito tsunamis and sub-zero temperatures, this Alaskan couple embarked on an 850 mile human powered expedition through Alaska to discover firsthand just how enormous the impacts of open-pit gold mining in the roadless wilderness could be.
