'Discovering a pillar of Latin jazz; presenting a community's history and culture through its performance tradition.' 'A Zest for Life' uncovers a pillar of Afro-Peruvian jazz. It combines performance, interviews, on-location video, photographs and a host's narration to present a lively and colorful tradition. Afro-Peruvian music and dance originated in the days of slavery, created by a community resourceful in the face of adversity, able to survive by making fun of those in power. Filmed primarily in California, most performers are native Peruvians. The documentary's star, charismatic and world famous Lalo Izquierdo (from Peru), is artistic director, lead dancer, lead percussionist and chief interview subject. Other luminaries include singer-songwriter Jorge Luis Jasso and guitarist Vladimir Vukanovich. Gabriela Shiroma (business director/lead female dancer) also deserves mention.
