Isa is a courageous, headstrong young woman living in Germany during the time of Nazi rule. Her plans to become a teacher are nixed when she is denied her school-leaving certificate, in spite of having successfully passed all exams, because she performs a satirical anti-establishment song at the graduation ceremony. Isa now decides to make a living as a cabaret performer, a career choice which doesn't please her parents. She soon becomes a success as a singer and accordion player, and she meets and falls in love with a young pianist. She also makes the acquaintance of a young Countess who is involved in a Catholic organization, and the two women becomes close friends. Meanwhile, Isa is horrified to learn that her father is having an extramarital affair, but she hopes that it will blow over and things will straighten out for her parents. However, her father refuses to end the affair, and her journalist mother asks to be transferred to Greece. Isa turns to Catholicism for strength and guidance. The the war begins, and the family is further torn apart by the political powers of the time.
