Archie Lauchlan's documentary looks at the past, present and future of Hastings Pier in East Sussex, UK. Built in 1872, the pier was one of many built on beaches around the UK and helped the tourist industry for this seaside town. Lauchlan uses computer graphics to chart the development of the pier over the decades and its changing face and usage. The documentary also charts a number of significant periods of the pier's history: it was first destroyed by fire in 1917 and then rebuilt five years later. It became an iconic music venue in the Sixties, and played hosts to concerts by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Tom Jones, Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Sex Pistols. Re: A Pier features a collection of interviews with those who performed and witnessed this music. When the pier was destroyed by fire again in 2010, the local community set about raising the necessary funds to restore the pier again, and Lauchlan also charts their journey as they work over a six year period to rebuild the pier once more.
