Dr. Frederick Perls (1893-1970) discusses his development of Gestalt therapy, and conducts a group therapy session utilizing the Gestalt approach. Together with his wife Laura he founded the first institute for their new therapy, "Gestalt therapy," in New York City, in 1952. The Perls family moved to California in 1960, started a long-term residency at Esalen, Big Sur, and became a major and lasting influence there. He led numerous seminars at Esalen, and he and Jim Simkin led Gestalt Therapy training courses there.
