For more than a century it was common practice in BC to segregate and confine people with developmental disabilities in large institutions. On October 21, 1996 that practice finally came to an end when the last two residents of Woodlands institution moved to their new homes in the community. Documenting an art exhibit of the same name, this video presents a rich tapestry of images and spoken memories, drawn from the experiences of several individuals who lived in Woodlands, Tranquille, and Glendale Lodge. Challenging, provocative, and above all powerful, this video contributes to an important but little-known chapter in BC's social history. Suitable for use in secondary schools, colleges and universities, community groups and social justice organizations. Available in DVD format. Developed by the BC Self Advocacy Foundation, in partnership with BCACL, with funding from Social Development Canada. Visit Inclusion BC for more details.
