On a train, a middle-aged man, who recently lost his wife, gets involved in a conversation about love and relationships with other passengers. Against common thought, he defends the thesis that love is not a poetical and pure sentiment, as the other interlocutors naively think. While he talks about romanticized male-female acting models, which are typical of a patriarchal society, he supports his thesis by giving examples from his marriage with a series of flashbacks. He narrates the events, which led to his wife becoming independent from him and later die.
