The poetic love story of a couple, Claire and Guillaume, who suffers the consequences of lack of communication. Claire keeps a huge secret from Guillaume and they break up as a result. This sends Guillaume in search of an explanation, or rather a scapegoat, for the demise of their relationship. However, the situation in which he finds himself leads to even more pain. It ends in tragedy for the characters, their lack of communication ultimately getting the better of them. The story, told in parts, explores each character's point of view and feelings. In the end, the pieces fit together to reveal the whole picture. Hanakotoba is the Japanese form of the language of flowers. It represents a form of communication which allows the expression of certain feelings. While the film displays flowers at key moments, it emphasizes the lack of communication between the two protagonists.
