I'm less interested in this type of science fiction film that attempts to be mysterious solely to convey ideas or showcase grand scenes. The movie is filled with epic, war-like scores, which can get a little fatiguing after a while. While these visuals and scenes may resonate with readers of the original novel, the story feels somewhat hollow for non-readers like me.

Timothée Chalamet and the Art of the Press Tour

The greatest trick Timothée Chalamet ever pulled was making the world believe that A Complete Unknown's press tour was unplanned, organic and impulsive. It's easy to believe, since his movements are so uncommon. What other actor crashes a look-alike contest, goes on College GameDay, and sits down with a generational talent at the British Film Institute? Even when he does the usual press tour stops like interviews and premiers, he does them in a way that attracts attention, as we'll discuss. Chal

Sands and Stars: A Cinematic Journey Through Dune: Part Two

By Esteban Eordogh If you threw a rock on the internet when Dune came out, you’d hit a comment calling it “Star wars for adults.” The sandworm-eatimg-its-own-tail of that assessment aside, Denis Villeneuve’s efforts to adapt Frank Herbert’s novel of interplanetary empire and rebellion really share more in common with Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy – films which transposed a thorny, dense literary mythology into an accessible, groundbreaking spectacle which remains beloved today. In th

Who else but Zendaya?

If Zendaya Invites Me: Ready for Adventure, Even to Be the Hero of the Movie! When Zendaya invited me out, my brain experienced a temporary short circuit. It's not every day that one of the most talented, intelligent, and absolutely awesome people in the world asks you on a date. At that moment, my mind filled with thoughts like "Why me?" and "Should I have practiced more on how to be a normal person?" But, being the optimistic daydreamer that I am, I decided this was an opportunity too good to

CINEMATIC POETRY: An Ode to Denis Villeneuve

It’s difficult to name a filmmaker who hasn’t in some way, shape or form inspired and affected me; I am constantly going to the well of existing filmmakers and taking my fill of inspiration. Whether it’s Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” which was my introduction to more mature film, or Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” which I watched far too young, or Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” which I watched on repeat with my brothers; the list goes on and on. All of these filmmakers are inarguably titans an

The CURIOUS case of my two favourite 2024 movies

"Cinema as we know it is dead." I've read and heard this phrase, with those words or similar ones referring to the same—inaccurate—idea, thousands of times recently. The generalized pseudo-concept of movies not being done like before has been installed in a certain part of the cinephile's collective subconscious and gets repeated over and over… and over again. Is it nostalgia or laziness? There're still options for everyone: auteur blockbusters for the most sophisticated eyes, meaningless produc

Austin Butler: The Charismatic Star Shining Bright in Hollywood

In 2022, young actor Austin Butler received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his impressive portrayal of Elvis Presley in the film Elvis. This role marked a significant departure from his earlier image as a blonde heartthrob in teen shows like Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana Season 2, and The Carrie Diaries. In fact, his transition began earlier with roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Dead Don’t Die, collaborating with renowned directors like Quentin Tarantino and Jim

Villains Unveiled in ‘Dune: Part Two’

"Dune," originally written in the 1960s, is a masterpiece of science fiction literature known for its intricate and complex storylines. However, like all classic works, it faces the common challenge of being revered and emulated by generations of modern novels and films, making audiences well-versed in its narrative structures. Contemporary literary and cinematic works based on classic frameworks often add surprises, twists, and unexpected plots to cater to modern tastes. As a result, the thresh

Who are the real-life Fremen?

Dune was… surprisingly good? I can’t lie, I thought the first movie was dense and confusing as hell, so I wasn’t looking forward to the sequel. Luckily, though, despite how painfully long it was (literally - my back started aching halfway through), there was a lot more action and development that made the movie feel like an actual movie rather than a weird fantasy info-dump. Best of all, though, was getting to know the Fremen more. I feel like we rarely see films that touch on, let alone focus o

Dune Part Two: A Comprehensive Upgrade of Part One

Compared to the classical and restrained narrative strategy chosen for constructing the weltanschauung in Part One (“Dune”), Part Two progresses by leaps and bounds even with its extended length. The much-criticized pacing issues in Part One exist no more. Villeneuve's artistic and restrained style evolves into a faster-paced narrative with rapid editing and a continuous stream of information, while still maintaining compact storytelling with aesthetic considerations. The grand and majestic tone
