Described as a "Docufictiion" film, P.I.N.S. was filmed on location at Vanderheyden Hall near Troy, New York and was created from eight hours of taped interviews with children and staff of the juvenile educational facility which opened in 1833 under the name Troy Orphan Asylum. The film was the center of a First Amendment lawsuit attempting to place a restraining order on the film. The filmmaker, Paul Gray, was represented by the National Legal Director of the ACLU and a settlement was reached allowing the film to be shown with minor changes, which included identification of the film as a fictionalized documentary.
